A spray tip's size code encodes two separate pieces of information: the fan width (how wide the spray pattern lands on the surface) and the orifice diameter (how much material passes through per pass). It's easy to treat tip selection as one decision, but it's really two — pattern coverage and flow volume — and roof coating work leans hard on both.

Wider fan angles cover more surface area per pass, which matters on large flat and low-slope commercial roofs where production rate is a real cost factor. Orifice size is the one that scales with coating viscosity and desired mil build — thicker material and higher-build coats need a larger orifice to pass through without excessive pressure loss or clogging.

General sizing bands (not roof-coating-specific, but a useful starting point)

Every roof coating manufacturer's technical data sheet is written specifically for that formulation's viscosity and solids content, which makes it the actual source of truth for tip size, fan angle, and gun distance from the surface — not a general industry chart, and not what worked on the last job with a different product.

Signs your tip is wrong for the job

A tip that's too small for the coating's viscosity fights the pump — you'll see excessive pressure, a starved or sputtering pattern, and slower-than-expected production as the pump struggles to push material through an undersized opening. A tip that's too large for the material or job dumps too much volume too fast, making it hard to control mil thickness and film uniformity. Tip wear compounds both problems over time: a worn tip effectively enlarges the orifice, which is a common, easy-to-miss cause of inconsistent spray pattern on equipment that used to run fine.
